Lymphatic drainage is not a luxury add-on β it is a prescribed part of your BBL recovery. Skipping it does not just slow your recovery. It can permanently affect your results. Here is what it does, how many sessions you need, and what it costs in Colombia.
What Happens to Your Body After Liposuction
When your surgeon performs liposuction, the process disrupts the tiny lymphatic vessels in the treated areas. These vessels are part of your body's drainage system β they normally move fluid, waste products, and inflammatory cells away from tissues and toward your lymph nodes for processing.
When this system is disrupted by surgery, fluid accumulates in the treated areas. This is why you swell dramatically after a BBL. Some swelling is normal and expected. But excessive, prolonged fluid retention can cause seromas (pockets of trapped fluid), fibrosis (hard, lumpy scar tissue), and uneven contours that affect your final result.
What Lymphatic Drainage Massage Does
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique that uses gentle, rhythmic pressure to move accumulated fluid through your lymphatic system and toward functioning lymph nodes. It is not a deep tissue massage β the pressure is light and specific, following the natural pathways of lymphatic flow.
The results are tangible. After a session, patients typically notice visibly reduced swelling, softer tissue where it had felt hard, and improved comfort. Over a series of sessions, lymphatic drainage helps prevent fibrosis (the hard lumps that can form under the skin), reduces the risk of seroma formation, and promotes more even, smooth contouring.
How Many Sessions and When
Most surgeons prescribe 5β8 sessions during the first two weeks of recovery, beginning around day 3β5 post-surgery. Sessions typically last 45β60 minutes each.
After returning home, most patients benefit from an additional 5β10 sessions over the following 4β6 weeks. The total course of lymphatic drainage treatment often runs 10β15 sessions over 6β8 weeks, though your surgeon will give you a specific recommendation based on how your body is healing.
β οΈ The first sessions will be uncomfortable
Lymphatic drainage in the first week is not relaxing. Your body is swollen, bruised, and tender. The massage pressure is light, but touching swollen, post-surgical tissue is inherently uncomfortable. It gets progressively easier with each session as swelling decreases. Push through the early discomfort β the long-term benefit to your results is significant.
Cost in Colombia vs the US
One of the major advantages of having your surgery in Colombia is the cost of aftercare. Lymphatic drainage sessions in Colombia run $25β$50 per session. The same treatment in the US costs $80β$150+ per session. If you need 15 sessions total, that is $375β$750 in Colombia versus $1,200β$2,250 in the US.
Some premium recovery houses include lymphatic drainage sessions in their nightly rate. If your recovery house offers this, take advantage β it simplifies scheduling and saves money. If not, independent lymphatic drainage therapists specializing in post-surgical care are widely available in MedellΓn, BogotΓ‘, and Cali. Your surgeon or recovery house can recommend one.
Finding a Therapist at Home
When you return home, you will need to continue lymphatic drainage sessions. Look for a massage therapist or physical therapist who is specifically trained in manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) and has experience with post-surgical patients. A general massage therapist without MLD training is not an adequate substitute β the technique is specialized, and incorrect pressure or technique can worsen swelling or cause damage to healing tissue.
Ask your Colombian surgeon for a post-op lymphatic drainage protocol that you can share with your therapist at home, including recommended frequency, technique notes, and areas of focus.
β Think of it as part of the surgery
The best way to think about lymphatic drainage is as a continuation of your procedure, not an optional extra. Your surgeon sculpted your body on the operating table. Lymphatic drainage helps your body heal into that sculpted shape properly, rather than retaining fluid and developing fibrosis that obscures the work. Budget for it as a mandatory line item alongside your surgical fee, not a "nice to have."
