Most of the BBL safety conversation focuses on injection technique — for good reason. But the harvesting step, before any injection happens, has a real effect on your final result that's worth understanding too.
What VASER liposuction actually does
VASER uses ultrasound energy to gently break up fat cells before they're removed, as opposed to traditional liposuction's more purely mechanical extraction. The result is fat cells that are less traumatized during harvesting — which matters directly for graft survival once that fat is reinjected during the BBL portion of the procedure.
Fat cells that survive the harvesting process intact are more likely to survive the transfer process too. Harvesting technique is a real, if less-discussed, factor in how much of your transferred volume you actually retain long-term.
How this connects to graft survival
See our dedicated graft survival guide for the fuller picture — harvesting technique is one of several factors (alongside injection technique, patient factors, and post-op care) that together determine how much of your initial result you retain.
Also relevant to lipo 360
VASER technology isn't exclusive to BBL prep — it's also commonly used for standalone 360-degree body contouring. If you're combining a BBL with broader lipo 360 work, see our guide on combining these procedures for how the harvesting and contouring goals work together.
A fair question for your consultation
Ask what liposuction technology your surgeon uses for fat harvesting specifically, and why. It's a reasonable, specific question, and a surgeon confident in their technique should have a clear answer.
