Price Red Flags
If a BBL is advertised at $1,500–$2,000 "all inclusive," something is being cut. At that price point, it's usually the surgeon's qualifications, anaesthesia quality, facility accreditation, or post-operative monitoring. Legitimate BBL surgery in Colombia costs $3,000–$6,000+ for good reason — qualified surgeons, accredited facilities, proper anaesthesia, and adequate staff cost money. The cheapest option is the most dangerous option in cosmetic surgery.
Surgeon Red Flags
Walk away if the surgeon is not SCCP-certified (or can't provide verification), if you can't find any information about their training or credentials online, if they refuse to discuss their technique (specifically whether they inject subcutaneously or intramuscularly), if they promise specific results or guarantee outcomes, if they've never declined a patient or told someone they're not a candidate, or if they pressure you to book immediately with "limited availability" urgency.
Facility Red Flags
The facility should be accredited and equipped for emergencies. Red flags include surgery performed in a non-medical setting (hotel rooms, apartments, unlicensed clinics), no visible anaesthesia monitoring equipment, no recovery area with medical staff, inability to provide facility accreditation documentation, and no clear emergency protocol or hospital transfer arrangement.
Process Red Flags
Be extremely cautious if the clinic requires full payment upfront with no refund policy, if there's no pre-operative medical evaluation or blood work, if the surgeon is willing to operate on you the same day as consultation (no cooling-off period), if they're performing multiple BBLs on the same day in rapid succession (assembly-line approach), or if they discourage you from researching or getting second opinions.
Protecting Yourself
The single most important thing you can do to protect yourself is verify SCCP board certification. You can check directly through the SCCP's official directory. Beyond certification, request a virtual consultation before travelling, ask specifically about subcutaneous injection technique and ultrasound guidance, verify the facility's accreditation, and trust your instincts — if something feels off during the process, it probably is. There are enough excellent, safe, affordable surgeons in Colombia that you never need to compromise on safety.
