Bottom line up front: For BBL specifically, surgeon selection is even more critical than for other cosmetic procedures because of the procedure's historical safety profile. Your checklist has three non-negotiables: SCCP board certification, ultrasound-guided subcutaneous technique, and an accredited surgical facility. Everything else is secondary.
The Non-Negotiables
1. SCCP Board Certification
Verify at sccp.org.co. No exceptions. A surgeon performing BBL without plastic surgery board certification is an unacceptable risk โ this is a technically demanding procedure that requires specific training.
2. Ultrasound-Guided Fat Injection
Ask explicitly: "Do you use real-time ultrasound guidance during fat injection?" If the answer is no, move on. Ultrasound guidance is the current safety standard for BBL and allows the surgeon to visually confirm subcutaneous placement during every injection pass.
3. Accredited Facility
JCI, ICONTEC, or PAMEC accreditation. Interquirofanos in Medellรญn is the only JCI-accredited plastic surgery clinic in Colombia and is an excellent benchmark. Other nationally accredited facilities are also acceptable.
Important But Secondary
Case volume: Ask how many BBLs the surgeon performs per month/year. Higher volume generally correlates with better outcomes. A surgeon doing 10+ BBLs per month has deep procedural experience.
Before-and-after photos: Look for patients with similar body types. Natural, unfiltered photos at multiple time points. Consistency across results (not just cherry-picked best cases).
Revision policy: What happens if you are not satisfied with results at 6โ12 months? Some clinics include revision within a specified period at reduced or no additional cost.
Questions for Your Consultation
What technique do you use for fat injection, and do you use ultrasound guidance? What is your complication rate for BBL specifically? Where will the surgery be performed, and what is that facility's accreditation? What is your emergency protocol if a complication occurs? How much fat do you typically transfer, and what survival rate do you see? What is your revision policy? Can I see before-and-after photos of patients with a similar body type to mine?
